Dylan Martinez, photograph taken of anti-globalization protestors and italian caribinieri at the G8 summit of 2001.
I used this first photograph today to discuss news images, narrative violence and so on. I used the analysis of the image and its captions by Perlmutter and Wagner (click on photo) which shows how the photograph was used to negatively portray the protestor Carlo Giuliani (in the front left of the image) who seconds later was shot in the face by the pistol you see pointed at him from inside the van. The second photo shows Giuliani dead on the ground, having also been run over by the van. Oddly, his clothing looks different, but it is him.
